The Last Note

Written by Jon Hamilton

He sits at the piano, back stiff.

The lone hallway light shines through the darkness.

“Don’t stop playing, you son of a bitch,” the woman says, standing behind him.

His left ear itches.

Click! The hammer of the gun is pulled back.

He never could have guessed it would end like this.

In fact, he was never sure it would end at all.

“Stop, and I swear to God I will pull the trigger,” she says.

He believes her. Why wouldn’t he?

“Do you want me to say I’m sorry?” he asks.

She doesn’t answer.

A tear runs down his cheek.

“I’m sorry,” he says, as his hands leave the keys.

Bang!

One of them falls to the floor.
